Mythology: In Greek mythology Hypnos was the personification of sleep. He lived in a cave so he couldn't see the rising or setting sun, nor the "lightsome" moon. At the entrance to the cave he had poppies and other hypnotic plants.
The Herbs:
CHAMOMILE (Matricaria recutita) - Used as a mild sleep aid for thousands of years, Chamomile is believed to have relaxing properties of a tonic nature. Used by traditional herbalists as a mild sedative for nervousness and nightmares, it believed to be especially beneficial for infants and elders who are restless when attempting to sleep. The sedative activity is thought to largely be due to the constituent, apigenin, which can produce mild sedation and decrease feelings of anxiety.*
HOPS (Humulus lupulus) - Used by herbalists to naturally promote relaxation and exert calming effects, thereby inducing rest. A German Commission E monograph found this herb effective for treating sleep disorders and mood problems. The sedative-hypnotic effect of hops is partially due to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol.*
LEMON BALM (Melissa officinalis) - Used by herbalists to calm the nervous system and for the relief of occasional sleeplessness especially when associated with stress.*
Precautions: Persons with allergies to ragweed and other members of the Asteraceae family should exercise caution with chamomile.
